OPERA
MOUNT HERZOG [2024]
Mount Herzog tells the story of a filmmaker’s dream, mobilised against nature, as he seeks to capture the image of a 300-tonne steamship being dragged over a Peruvian mountain.
As a visionary film director, Herzog is committed to creating a visceral art, where the sweat, blood and tears of his actors are felt and real. Battered and bruised by the elements, Herzog is also held back by a roguish and jealous leading actor, who takes every opportunity to thwart the progress of the film.
Friendships are severed, crew members are injured, and the wide-eyed idealism that sparked his vision is in danger of collapsing. In the midst of the suffocating Peruvian jungle, Herzog’s steamship refuses to move, and he finds himself asking the question, ‘what is the ultimate cost of dreams?’.
Mount Herzog was commissioned by the Tête-À-Tête Opera Festival, and was the best-seller of the 2024 season. The opera was first performed at the Cockpit Theatre, in Marylebone, on 27th September 2024. This project is ongoing.
Words and music by Marcello Palazzo.
